Do You Know What Horsepower is?

What is horsepower? It’s usually one of the top things people look at when searching for a new car, but one of the last things they understand.

An engineer in the 18th century named James Watt coined the term “horsepower". He used this term to lure in potential customers to buy his steam engines. The idea came while working at a coal mine with ponies. He decided to estimate how much power was generated while these animals lifted coal out of the mines.

By his calculations, a coal pony could raise 22,000 pounds of work per minute. Raising this number by fifty percent is how he got 33,000 pounds per minute and the horsepower was born.
